That click is the contactor pulling in. Power is reaching the unit and nothing is turning. The most common cause by far is a failed run capacitor. The capacitor gives the motor the kick it needs to start spinning, and it fails from heat, age, and salt corrosion. It is also one of the least expensive parts on the whole system. Here is the honest version. A dead capacitor is not a reason to replace your air conditioner. If someone quotes you a new system off a clicking fan, get a second opinion. It can also be a seized motor or a burned contactor, which we confirm on site. Do not open the electrical panel yourself. Capacitors hold a charge that can hurt you badly even with the power off.

Why is my upstairs not cooling when downstairs is fine?

There are two versions of this. If upstairs and downstairs run on separate systems, the upstairs unit has its own problem. Usually low refrigerant, a dead capacitor, or a safety float switch that shut it down because the drain pan backed up. Check the breaker for the attic unit and check that unit's own filter. Both get forgotten. If one system serves the whole house, it is an airflow problem. Hot attics cook the ductwork, leaks dump cold air into the attic, and heat rises anyway. Closing downstairs vents rarely helps and often hurts. The real fixes are sealing and resizing duct runs, adding a return upstairs, or zoning with dampers. We measure airflow before recommending any of that.

Why is my AC or furnace leaking water?

Almost always it is condensate, not refrigerant. Your evaporator coil pulls moisture out of the air and that water has to drain somewhere. A rusted pan, a disconnected line, or a frozen coil that thaws will do it too. Turn the system off first so it stops making water. You can put a shop vac on the outside end of the drain line and pull the clog out. If water keeps coming back, the pan or the coil is the problem. Water sitting near a furnace or in a ceiling turns into mold damage fast.
